BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Following a fall season when the Bridgewater Eagles finished in the runner-up spot in three sports, the Eagles sit in third place overall in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Commissioner Cup standings, released on Thursday by the league office.
Bridgewater saw each of its fall sports teams reach conference postseason play, including a runner-up performance by the women’s soccer team. In the 2012 ODAC Cross Country Championships, the men’s and women’s harriers took home a second-place finish in the league.
On the men’s side, the Eagles sit in fifth place after a strong fall sports season. The Bridgewater men’s soccer team led the league for a portion of the 2012 campaign before reaching the quarterfinal round of the ODAC tournament. Bridgewater’s football team finished in a tie for third place in the conference after a 7-3 season on the gridiron.
The Bridgewater women are in fourth place following a successful fall season. The Eagles field hockey team finished in third place in the league, while the volleyball team finished in a three-way tie for third place overall.
Lynchburg College owns the slimmest of advantages over Washington and Lee University in the running for the Dan Wooldridge Overall Champions Cup. The Hornets share the top spot in the ODAC Men's Commissioner's Cup standings with Roanoke College, while W&L leads the rankings for the ODAC Women's Commissioner's Cup.
Farm Bureau Insurance is the proud sponsor for the Dan Wooldridge Overall Champions Cup and the ODAC Men and Women's Commissioner's Cups. Farm Bureau and the ODAC continue their partnership in focusing on the strength of the conference's student-athletes and maintaining the NCAA Division III philosophy of the complete student-athlete experience. Aside from supporting the ODAC Commissioners' Cups, Farm Bureau is the sponsor of the ODAC's sport-by-sport scholar-athlete awards.
As determined by the ODAC Board of Directors, points for the Commissioner's Cups are based on regular-season standings in team sports and championship team finishes in individual sports. Each institution has a total number of possible points it can collect based on its individual sport sponsorship. The total number of points earned is then divided by the total number of possible points to determine the rating for each institution.
Looking to hoist its first overall trophy since 2001-02, Lynchburg leads 10-time defending and 16-time overall champion Washington and Lee by just 0.006 rating points (0.866-to-0.860). The Hornets collected 58.0 of a possible 67.0 points to slide atop the Generals, who themselves picked up 64.5 of a possible 75 tallies. Bridgewater College sits third (0.747 rating), while Randolph-Macon College (0.704) and Roanoke College (0.672) round out the top-five.
LC and Roanoke each secured 21.0 of a possible 23.0 points to tie for the men's cup lead with 0.913 ratings. Lynchburg won the cross country championship in addition to finishing third in the soccer standings. The Maroons captured the #1 position in the soccer tables, while also placing third at the cross country championships in Harrisonburg. W&L holds down the third slot with a 0.839 rating powered by the top billing in the football standings.
Washington and Lee earned 38.5 of a possible 44.0 points for a chart-topping 0.875 rating towards the women's cup. The Generals won the cross country title in addition to placing second in the soccer and volleyball standings. Lynchburg is second with a 0.841 rating (37.0-of-44.0) after a fall campaign in which the Hornets won their seventh straight ODAC field hockey crown. Randolph-Macon follows closely in third with a 0.824 rating (28.0-of-34.0) boosted by the Yellow Jackets undefeated run through its regular season conference volleyball schedule.
