WEYERS CAVE, VA. - Bridgewater College finished in third place Friday afternoon at the Bridgewater College Euqestrian Show, finishing just three points behind Hollins University at the IHSA event.
Bridgewater riders hosted 10 other colleges and universities on Friday in a tightly contested show. Hollins won the event with 41 points, Lynchburg finished with 40 points and Bridgewater was a close third with 38 points. The remaining colleges were a minimum of 10 points behind Bridgewater as Sweet Briar finished in fourth with 28 points followed by James Madison earning 21. Washington and Lee and Randolph College both scored 19 points, followed by the University of Virginia with 18 points. Roanoke College with 15 points, Longwood University with 13 points and Rdaford Univerity with seven.
As the points continue to be totaled throughout the year Bridgewater moved from fourth place to second place in the regional standings with Lynchburg leading by a narrow margin. Hollins University is in third place just one point behind Bridgewater. Right now it appears to be a three college race but the 11 colleges meet five more times this season.
The fall semester ends with a show on Sunday hosted by Hollins University and then the season will continue in February of 2011.
Jamie Robinson won both of her classes and was in a ride off with Lynchburg"s Kelly Gerland for the High Point Rider of the show. Robinson finished as Reserve Champion High Point Rider.
The individual results of the Bridgewater riders were as follows.
Senior Shelby Goodman won the Open Equitation Over Fences.
Chelsea Hames finished second and freshman Kayla Deyarmin finished sixth in Intermediate Fences.
Robinson won Novice Over Fences and Lindsay Goode was second in the class.
Savannah English won her Advanced Walk, Trot, Canter section and Geordan Duncan finished fifth.
Allyson Gallamore rode to a second place finish in the Walk-Trot Division.
In Novice Equitation on the Flat, Lauren Casey placed sixth with Katie Leonard second in her section. Lindsey Ferguson addec a second and Robinson won her section. Ferguson's finish qualified the BC rider for the regional competition, just two steps away from Nationals.
Intermediate Equitaion on the Flat saw Caitlin Hewitt and Marissa Gallaway finish sixth. Sarah Black won her section.
Freshman Tara Deckel placed fourth in Open Equitation on the Flat.
The Bridgewater are optimistic about the rest of the season as the Eagles are riding with more freshmen on the team than ever before. The coaches feel that as those riders gain confidence in their new roles, considering the success experienced by our upperclassmen, that the team should finish very strong in the Spring season.
