Six Different Players Score as the Eagles Defeat St. Vincent 7-0 in Opening Round of Mapp Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater Eagles (3-1) field hockey team scored early and often while a stingy defense pitched another shutout as BC defeated St. Vincent (2-3) by 7-0 score in the opening game of the Mapp Invitational.

In the first half, BC got on the board at the 24:40 mark when junior Brianna Jacques took a pass from junior Kalah Hess and put a shot past the St. Vincent keeper to put Bridgewater ahead 1-0.

Less than two minutes later, Jacques broke free in the Bearcats defense and beat the keeper again to extend BC's lead to a 2-0 tally. Jacques leads the Eagles with five goals through four games.

BC tallied its final goal of the half when Christina Pybus took a rebound off a St. Vincent save and beat the goalie to the right side to put the Eagles up 3-0 at the intermission.

The second half was more of the same for BC as Megan Bach got the scoring started at the 39:24 mark following a SVU penalty inside the box, granting Bach a penalty shot. The Eagles defender beat St. Vincent's keeper to the blocker side to put BC up 4-0.

Following a 13 minute gap in the scoring, junior Leah Cossentino fired a shot into the cage at the 52:47 mark to put BC ahead 5-0.

Sixty-four seconds later, freshman Joan Burleson got into the scoring mix by posting her first career goal, extending Bridgewater's lead to a 6-0 margin.

With 1:15 remaining in the contest, freshman Jennifer Bateman also tallied her first career goal off a pass from sophomore Kirsten Ganslow to finalize the scoring at 7-0.

In the cage, senior starter Elizabeth Sullivan (2-0) picked up the win, while splitting time with sophomore Taylor Waddell. Sullivan didn't see a shot during her 35 minutes of action, while Waddell posted a pair of saves in the second half.

Bridgewater will play in tomorrow's championship game at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of today's late game between Sweet Briar and Drew.
