BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In the regular season finale at Mapp Field, the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team hung around early and tallied a goal late, but a quick goal barrage from #3 Lynchburg College proved to be too much to overcome as the Eagles fell by a 4-1 score in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
Bridgewater's (9-7, 5-3 ODAC) goal in the game was only the second goal allowed by Lynchburg in conference play.
The two teams exchanged shots early in the game before Kelli Williams put the Hornets ahead in the 17th minute with a goal off of a rebound from her own shot to put Lynchburg (15-1, 7-0 ODAC) up 1-0.
Following the goal, Lindsay Leonard scored the first of two quick goals at the 23:10 mark to extend the Hornets lead to 2-0 before tallying her second goal 26 seconds later to put the Lynchburg up 3-0 as the game headed to the halftime break.
Out of the intermission, things remained relatively quiet until Katie Kline extended the Lynchburg lead off of a tip in from a Nicole Marburger pass to put the Hornets up 4-0 at the 57:52 mark.
Bridgewater tallied a goal in the 69th minute when Jennifer Bateman scored an unassisted tally to trim the gap to 4-1, which is where the game would end.
Lynchburg outshot Bridgewater by a 19-to-5 tally and owned a 12-to-2 advantage in corners.
Senior goalkeeper Taylor Waddell turned away 13 Lynchburg shots in the loss, while Tiffany Frye posted just one save to record the victory.
Bridgewater is back in action on Thursday when it travels to #19 Mary Washington. Action is set for a 400 p.m. start.
