Tierson Goal Leads Eagles Past #14 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A first half goal by Tessa Tierson was the difference as the Bridgewater College field hockey team upset #14 Christopher Newport 1-0 on the road Saturday.

The Eagles played a ball into the top of the circle in the 23rd minute that was tipped by Marisa Sims over to Tierson on the left side. Tierson beat Bailey Lien up high for the game's only goal.

It was Bridgewater's third win over a nationally-ranked team in their past 10 games. The Eagles have played eight ranked opponents over the past two seasons.

Sims was the starting goalie in 2-1 wins over #15 Lynchburg and #17 Catholic last November before recording the winning assist in today's victory.

Freshman goalie Ali Bishop had a huge game with 10 saves to protect a memorable shutout. Bishop and the BC back line also successfully defended eight second half corners, and 15 total.

Bishop stopped both Josie Morgan and Rachel Allshouse with four minutes to go, before CNU's Abby Cryts finally fired a shot wide to end the threat.

A minute later the Captains earned a penalty corner with Bishop saving Carol Thompson after Thompson had played the insert and then made a run to the near post.

Allshouse fired a shot at the final buzzer that was blocked by Bishop to give the freshman double-digit saves on the day.

There were no shots by either team for almost 10 minutes to start the second half, before Bishop came up with a save on Cryts.

The Eagles then had some chances to make it 2-0, with both Madison Clement and Tierson having shots saved by Lien in quick succession.

Bridgewater improves to 3-3 on the season and will play at Frostburg State next Saturday. CNU loses for the first time this season and is 5-1.
