Matisons Records Two Points in 2-0 Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – Freshman Emily Matisons had a goal and an assist as the Bridgewater College field hockey team defeated Frostburg State 2-0 on the road Saturday.

Matisons recorded points in both halves, but less than 11 minutes apart. She opened the scoring in the 34th minute after Casey Gaffney forced a turnover and fed her behind the defense, just 62 seconds before halftime.

Less than 10 minutes into the second period, Matisons found senior Shannon Strosser at the back post to double BC's advantage.

Bridgewater won its fourth straight game over Frostburg State, following last year's tight 2-1 win on a goal by Allison Kirk within the final seven minutes.

Freshman goalie Ali Bishop had kept shutouts in two of the past three games and split one today with two saves. Classmate Alexis Thomasson played the final 20+ minutes in the cage and was also credited with two stops.

After three Eagles corners ran off an FSU player advantage following a green card, Thomasson stopped Taylor Bowen on the counterattack.

With four minutes remaining, she made another save on Holly Van Wie to protect the shutout.

The Eagles recorded just seven shots on goal but controlled possession for the majority of the contest, including 13 penalty corners to two for the Bobcats.

The Eagles (4-3) will have another road non-conference matchup on Wednesday at Ferrum, before hosting Randolph-Macon on Saturday night for Family Weekend. Bridgewater is 1-1 in ODAC play.

Frostburg State is 5-3 and will host Dickinson on Wednesday.
