SALEM, Va. - A goal just before halftime held up as the Bridgewater College field hockey team fell 1-0 in the Eagles' conference opener at Roanoke.

Bridgewater lost despite an 11-8 shot advantage and an 8-3 lead in penalty corners.

The game's only goal came 40 seconds before halftime, when Roanoke's Lauren Heffron chipped a shot over Ali Bishop, with an assist from Leonore Keunan.

Bridgewater had an early offensive flurry, getting a corner in the second minute after a shot by Jacqueline DiFulvio was saved. A shot by Laura Gretz was saved and a rebound attempt from Casey Gaffney was cleared off the line.

The Eagles earned another penalty corner six minutes after halftime, with a shot from Elizabeth Washington saved by Emma Clark.

Bridgewater had one final corner with time expired. DiFulvio got a shot off from Gaffney's insert, but the final chance was blocked by a defender and cleared.
