Hot-Shooting Elon Defeats Eagles

ELON, N.C. - Elon University blistered the nets in the first half Tuesday night to take a 58-28 halftime lead and the Phoenix went on to defeat Bridgewater College, 95-51, in an exhibition contest for the Eagles.

The Eagles got off to a quick start as a 3-pointer by Brian Lynch and a layup by Romie Powell gave BC a 5-2 lead.

The Phoenix then started to heat up with Lucas Troutman dominating the paint and Jack Isenbarger hitting from long range.

The two scored 16 points each in the first half with Troutman hitting 6-of-9 from the lane while Isenbarger knocked down 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Elon shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the first half, including 10-of-18 from 3-point range.

The Eagles were plagued by turnovers in the first half as they turned it over 15 times.

Bridgewater did battle the Phoenix to a standoff of the boards with each team grabbing 15 rebounds in the first half. Daniel McClain and David Larson led the Eagles with three boards each in the first 20 minutes.

The Phoenix cooled off in the second half, but still connected on 16-of-34 of its 3-point attempts for the game.

Twelve players scored for the Eagles, led by Tavis Stapleton with nine. Ed Reddick added seven points and a team-high five rebounds.

Isenbarger led Elon with 19 points. Sebastian Koch added 18 with Troutman adding 17 and Ryley Belmont 15.

The Eagles open their season Friday evening when they play Ferrum College in a first-round game at the Eastern Mennonite Tip-Off Classic.
