BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's basketball team is taking the week off for exams before returning to action Saturday against Averett University in a non-conference contest.
The Cougars will provide the Eagles with a formidable opponent. Averett is 2-2 thus far and has split a pair of games against ODAC foes. The Cougars knocked off Guilford, 82-77, but lost to Lynchburg, 82-69.
Averett returns four starters from last year's squad that finished with a 7-19 record. The Cougars and Eagles split two games a year ago with each winning on their home court. Bridgewater won at home 73-64, but lost in Danville, 74-68.
The Cougars are led by a pair of senior forwards – Paul Pierce and Marquis Scott. Pierce leads the team in scoring with 20.3 points per game and also averages 5.3 rebounds per contest. Scott is averaging a double-double with 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
Completing the frontcourt is junior forward Paul Porter. Porter is almost averaging a double-double with 9.0 points and a team-high 11.8 boards per outing.
The final returning starter is point guard Sunil Ram who is averaging 9.5 points and 3.0 assists per game.
Freshman JaColby Hawkins completes the starting five. The first-year guard is averaging 6.0 points per game.
Most of the production off the bench is being provided by Bradley Robinson. The 6-4 freshman guard is averaging 12.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Eagles are 4-2 on the season following a 71-62 victory over Emory & Henry.
Junior guard Ronnie Thomas leads the Eagles in scoring with 13.0 points per game. Thomas also averages 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Sophomore forward Ed Reddick averages 10.7 points and a team-best 6.0 boards per outing. Sophomore forward Aaron Adams is also scoring in double figures with 10.0 points per contest.
Saturday's game against Averett is set for a 2 p.m. start.
