Yellow Jackets Hold Off Eagles

Chandler Murray scored 15 points against Randolph-Macon

BRIDGEWATER – Randolph-Macon closed the first half with a 7-0 run to take an eight-point, 43-35, halftime lead and the Yellow Jackets led the rest of the way in an 83-72 victory Wednesday night over Bridgewater College.

Randolph-Macon (11-3, 5-0 in the ODAC) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on layups by Darryl Williams and Buzz Anthony before the Eagles got on the board with a 3-pointer by Josh Cammon.

The Yellow Jackets reeled off the next eight points to lead 11-3 before Ken Stanciel came off the bench and scored inside cut the margin to 11-5. Randolph-Macon continued to inch away from the Eagles and a bucket by Montese Adams with 10:41 left in the half put the visitors on top, 20-10.

Eagles' forward Davrion Grier scored on an inside move, but Adams tallied from long range, giving the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the half, 23-12. Bridgewater then ran off eight straight points to slice the deficit to three. TJ Turner and Chandler Murray sandwiched 3-pointers around two foul shots by Zach Breathwaite, trimming the margin to 23-20 with 8:12 left in the half.

Anthony and Murray traded 3-pointers before a pair of foul shots by Dimetri Chambers cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to one, 26-25. Murray then knocked down another 3-pointer to put the Eagles ahead for the first time and a bucket by Chambers increased the Bridgewater lead to 30-26 with 5:25 remaining in the half.

Terry Woods hit a 3-pointer and Luke Neeley made 1-of-2 free throws to pull Macon even, but Bridgewater regained the lead when Turner drove the baseline and converted a three-point play, putting the Eagles ahead by three points, 33-30. The Yellow Jackets responded and surged ahead with six straight points as Anthony scored a pair of buckets and Adams threw down a dunk for a 36-33 Macon lead.

After Sami El-Rafey scored inside the pull the Eagles within one, the Yellow Jackets scored the final seven points of the half to go up 43-35. The Eagles helped fuel the Jackets' run by turning the ball over on three of their final four possessions of the half.

The Yellow Jackets opened up a 61-49 lead with 12:53 left in the game, forcing the Eagles to play catch-up the rest of the way. Bridgewater cut the margin to six points on several occasions but could get no closer as the Randolph-Macon closed out the victory to remain undefeated in ODAC play.

Murray came off the bench to lead the Eagles with 15 points. AJ Horde scored 14 and Chambers added 10. Anthony paced the Yellow Jackets with 20 points, 14 coming in the first half. Neeley added a spark of the bench for the Yellow Jackets with 19 points.

Bridgewater (8-6, 2-3 in the ODAC) returns to action Saturday with a long road trip to Greensboro, N.C. to play Guilford College.
