EMORY, Va. - Emory & Henry made 3-pointers on its first three possessions of the second half to open up an 11-point lead and the 21st-ranked Wasps went on to defeat Bridgewater 90-73 Saturday afternoon in ODAC men's basketball action.
The Eagles matched the ODAC-leading Wasps for most of the first half. Emory & Henry's biggest lead was 34-27 when John Shelor knocked down a 3-pointer with just more than three minues left in the half. Ken Stanciel hit two layups to pull the Eagles to within three points before two foul shots by Emory & Henry's Chase Branscomb made the score 36-31. A three-point play by Josh Cammon made it a two-point game before a layup by Branscomb put the hosts on top 38-34 at the half.
The early long-range barrage by the Wasps to start the second half forced the Eagles to play catch-up the rest of the way. Shelor opened the second half with a 3-pointer before Dimetri Chambers scored on a driving layup to keep the Eagles within five, 41-36. Shelor and Branscomb drained back-to-back threes to push the lead to double digits for the first time, 47-36.
The Wasps pushed the margin to 15 points, 53-38, before a 15-6 Eagles' run cut the deficit to six. A three-point play by Stanciel pulled Bridgewater to within 57-47. Chambers and TJ Turner sandwiched 3-pointers around a layup by Emory & Henry's Daniel Spencer to cut the margin to 59-53 with 11:37 remaining.
A 3-pointer by Chandler Murray kept the margin at six, 65-59, with 8:56 left, but Jarris Hendricks scored inside and Branscomb added a 3-pointer to push the Wasps' lead back to double figures, 70-59 with eight minutes on the clock.
The lead was still 11 points after Chambers scored on a layup, cutting the Wasps' lead to 78-67 with five minutes left. The Wasps then outscored Bridgewater 12-6 down the stretch to close out the 90-73 victory.
Chambers scored 23 points to lead the Eagles while Stanciel just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Wasps placed five players in double figures, led by Branscomb with 25 points and Shelor with 24. Emory & Henry controlled the glass by a 47-34 margin with Alic Wynne pulling down 18 rebounds to lead the Wasps.
Bridgewater, now 11-8, 5-5 in the ODAC, returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles host Washington and Lee. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
