Eagles Hold Off Marymount in Fourth Quarter

ARLINGTON, Va. –
Bridgewater fought off a second half comeback attempt to defeat Marymount University 12-10 on the road Saturday.

The Saints cut a deficit to 10-8 and had possession twice with a chance to make it a one-goal game but Scott Tucker first forced a turnover and then later picked up a ground ball, leading to a Marymount slashing penalty.

Justin Calabrese made the man-up opportunity count, finishing off Chris Voorhees' pass for an 11-8 lead. He would then add another with 3:47 remaining, and the Eagles closed it out despite two late Saints tallies in the final three minutes.

Calabrese finished with a hat trick while Hunter Callan, Blake Mann and Steven Cosgrove each scored twice.

Kevin Metzger made five saves in a big fourth quarter for Bridgewater, and finished the game with 15 stops overall.

Marymount had rallied with three goals in a span of 2:50, starting with a man-up tally by Nathan Beard.

Callan answered with 39 seconds left in the third quarter but Dylan Watkins snuck one in before the end of the period and Beard scored in the opening minute of the fourth to make it a two-goal game.

The game had been tied 5-5 late in the second quarter before Bridgewater ran off four unanswered goals.

Mann gave the Eagles a halftime lead, and two Cosgrove goals sandwiched one by Callan to make it 9-5.

Bridgewater trailed 3-2 after a Marymount goal with 36 seconds left in the first quarter, but Sean MacLeish tied it up with six seconds left, and Taylor Phipps then gave the visitors the lead in the second quarter.

Marymount was led by Watkins' hat trick, and a five-point performance by Beard.

Bridgewater improves to 2-0 on the season and will be back home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. vs. Southern Virginia. SVU has also defeated Marymount by a two-goal margin (16-14) early in this 2017 season.
