Eagles Lose One-Goal Heartbreaker at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team was held scoreless in the second half, suffering another narrow loss to a fellow ODAC playoff contender- 7-6 at Guilford on Saturday.

Zack Capwell scored the game-winner with 2:12 remaining- the only goal of the fourth quarter for either side.

Nick Strider won the faceoff and Chris Voorhees got off two shots in the final 38 seconds, one that went wide and the final attempt saved by Guilford goalie Parker Styles.

A year ago, the Eagles defeated Virginia Wesleyan early in conference play before falling out of the playoff race with heartbreaking losses to Randolph-Macon (10-9 in overtime), Guilford (7-5) and Randolph (11-10). This season, the Eagles again defeated Virginia Wesleyan with a fourth quarter comeback, only to lose leads in one-goal defeats at Randolph-Macon and Guilford. BC plays at Randolph next Saturday and will need to finish strong over the final four regular season contests to get in the postseason mix.

Bridgewater raced out to a 4-0 first quarter lead as Steven Cosgrove scored twice in the opening nine minutes, sandwiching a Blake Mann goal. Mann added his second with 5:10 left in the first to make it 4-0.

Guilford got on the board with a man-up goal, but Sean MacLeish answered for Bridgewater early in the second quarter on the power play for a 5-1 lead.

Freshman Justin Calabrese ended the second quarter scoring to put the Eagles up 6-3, which was the final time BC would score in the contest.

Bridgewater was excellent on faceoffs, winning 12-of-16 as a team. Nick Strider won 8-of-10 faceoffs, and goalie Kevin Metzger totaled 12 saves and five ground balls.

The Eagles are 5-7 overall, and tied with Guilford for seventh in the ODAC at 1-4.
