BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College scored three second-half goals Saturday to defeat Hampden-Sydney in ODAC action.
Ryan Tavernaris (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) scored the game-winner off an assist from Derek Newsome (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) with just under 10 minutes left to play.
It looked as if the teams would go the break tied at 0-0, but Hampden-Sydney's James Lawrence scored off a pass from Bryan Talbert with just 28 seconds left in the half to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the break.
The Eagles applied the pressure to the Tigers' defense early in the second half and tied the score on a goal by Alec Utter (Centreville, Md./Westfield) at the 50:17 mark.
Bridgewater continued to control play and gained the upper hand, 2-1, on a goal by Patrick Thornton (Bowie, MD./Bowie) at the 57:43,
The Tigers bounced back and tied the score at the 65:19 mark when Nick DeProspero found the back of the net.
Both teams had chances and the Eagles finally cashed in when Tavernaris scored the game-winner at the 80:15 mark.
The Tigers held a slim 14-12 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Bridgewater keeper Travis Morris (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) finished with eight saves while Tigers keeper Duncan Oliphant finished with four saves.
The Eagles improve to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in the ODAC while Hampden-Sydney drops to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Bridgewater is back in action Monday afternoon when it hosts Washington and Lee. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
