BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory Tuesday afternoon over Averett in non-conference men's soccer action.
The Eagles got on the board first in the 26th minute when Julian Ofori held off a defender and possessed the ball in the box. Ofori worked free for a shot and scored from 10 yards out from the left side, making the score 1-0.
Bridgewater got a gift less than three minutes later. Averett's back line passed the ball back toward the keeper but the pass was misplayed and the ball rolled into the net for an own goal, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Just before the half, the Cougars were able to make it a one-goal game. Asher Francis took a shot from about 35 yards out and the ball carried over the keeper's head and just under the crossbar to cut the Eagles lead to 2-1 at the break.
Bridgewater increased the margin back two goals in the 55th minute. Ofori put a shot on goal that was saved by keeper Marius Olavesen, but Jacob Heiston was there to clean up the rebound and his goal gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Once again, however, the Cougars closed the gap. Nademe Tokhli served a free kick into the box where Felix Squire's header glanced off the post, Tobias Andreasson knocked in the rebound to trim the margin to 3-2 at the 64:00 mark.
Bridgewater answered less than four minutes later when Thomas White carried the ball down the left sideline toward the box, worked past his defender and chipped a shot past the keeper for a 4-2 Eagles lead.
Bridgewater, now 3-6 overall, returns to action Saturday when the team travels to Lexington, Va., to play Washington and Lee in ODAC action. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
