FOREST, Va. - Bridgewater College senior Renato Grgic has been selected as the ODAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week for his performance in the Eagles' 2-1 upset victory over No. 5 Washington and Lee. The player of the week is selected by the conference office.
Grgic recorded an assist on Bridgewater's first goal against W&L when his cross into the box led to a goal by Julian Ofori. With the Eagles nursing the 1-0 lead late in the second half, the Eagles' senior added what proved to be the winning goal. Grgic possessed the ball in the box and was tripped while trying to move along the baseline, resulting in a penalty kick for the Eagles. Grgic took the PK and his shot attempt to the lower left corner was blocked by the W&L keeper. However, the ball bounced away from the keeper and Grgic cleaned up the rebound, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead and they held on for the 2-1 victory.
Earlier in the week, the Eagles defeated Averett 4-2 in non-conference action. Although Grgic did not break into the scoring column, head coach Ryan Bennison praised the senior for his solid play in the midfield which created several scoring chances for the Eagles.
Bridgewater, now 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference, returns to action Wednesday when the Eagles host Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
