BRIDGEWATER – Bridgewater College men's soccer head coach Ryan Bennison has released his team's schedule for the upcoming 2018 season.
In addition to the challenging ODAC slate of games, the Eagles will play a solid non-conference schedule, beginning with two home games to start the season.
Bridgewater will host Bethany College on Friday, Aug. 31 to open the season and a day later the Eagles will host the Sewanee Tigers. Bethany, a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) posted an 8-9-2 overall mark in 2017. Sewanee, playing in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), finished with an 8-8 mark.
The Eagles are on the road for their next four non-conference games, starting with a trip to Danville, Va., to play Averett University. The Cougars, members of the USA South Athletic Conference, posted a 4-11-3 record in 2017. A year ago, the Eagles hosted Averett and took a 4-2 victory.
Bridgewater makes its annual trip to St. Mary's College in Maryland to play in the Seahawk Classic where the Eagles will meet Salisbury and St. Mary's, both members of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). Salisbury finished the 2017 season with an 8-9-3 record while St. Mary's posted an 11-7 record. The Eagles split two games at the 2017 Seahawk Classic, edging Salisbury 1-0 and falling to St. Mary's 2-1.
Bridgewater then makes the short trip to Harrisonburg to face rival Eastern Mennonite in a match that will not count in the ODAC standings. The Royals finished with a 10-7 record in 2017. EMU rallied from a 3-0 first-half deficit to defeat the Eagles 4-3 in overtime in last year's matchup.
The Eagles complete their non-conference slate with a home contest against Southern Virginia, another member of the CAC. Last season, the Eagles and SVU met at Emory & Henry's tournament with Bridgewater taking a 1-0 victory. The Knights were 4-15 overall in 2017.
Bridgewater's faces a new opponent on the conference schedule on Oct. 3 when the Eagles play at Ferrum College, the ODAC's newest member.
In addition to the game at Ferrum, Bridgewater has ODAC road games at Virginia Wesleyan, Hampden-Sydney, Lynchburg and Roanoke.
Bridgewater opens conference play on Sept. 19 when the Eagles host Shenandoah. Bridgewater also hosts Emory & Henry, Guilford, Randolph and Washington and Lee in ODAC play.
The Eagles will recognize the team's seniors on Oct. 5 when they host Randolph College for Senior Day.
Bridgewater finished the 2017 season with a 7-10-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in ODAC play.
