VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles men's tennis team extended its conference-leading winning streak to seven matches on Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 triumph in the regular season finale at Virginia Wesleyan.
Sunday's victory over the Marlins secured the No. 2 seed for the Eagles in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships. Bridgewater will do battle with seventh-seeded Roanoke College in next weekend's ODAC Quarterfinal affair.
At number two doubles, senior Brent Floyd and freshman Mike Cable teamed up to notch an 8-2 victory, while the team of Evan Stack and Robert Belton posted a tight 8-6 win at number three to keep the Eagles unbeaten through doubles play. For Floyd and Cable, the win was their team-leading 11th of the season and their seventh in conference play, also the best wins total on the team.
In singles play, Hawkins fell in the first set by a 6-4 tally before roaring back to pick up a 6-3 win in set two, forcing the third-set tiebreaker. In the extra set, Hawkins won the traditional superbreaker format by a 10-6 tally to earn the victory.
At number two, Stack rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph while Floyd posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at number three.
Sophomore Sam Churchill pulled out a 7-5, 6-4 win at number four before Cable notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at number five.
Virginia Wesleyan claimed its lone match of the day at number six, but junior Drew Hubble took the match to the brink. Hubble fell in the first set by a 6-4 tally before storming back to win set two by a 7-5 tally to force the third-set tiebreaker. Hubble fell by a 10-6 margin in the third set to drop the match.
Bridgewater is back in action on April 22 when they compete against Roanoke in the 2012 ODAC Championships.
