Eagles Rally To Edge Lynchburg

BRIDGEWATER - Bridgewater College ralliied from a 2-1 deficit at the conclusion of doubles play Friday afternoon to slip past Lynchburg College, 5-4, in ODAC men's tennis action played on Mapp Courts.

Bridgewater's Joe Dillenbeck and Josh Rodgers gave the Eagles the early lead with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles over Luke Sablik and Will Nsoesie. The next two matches were closely contested with the Hornets coming out on top. At No. 3 doubles, Lynchburg's Juan Borga and Colton Mullins turned back Bridgewater's Kris Stokes and Emmett Johnson, 8-5, to even the match. The Hornets grabbed the lead when Zack Shane and Nick Savino held off Freddie Roberts and Nathaniel Horner, 8-6, to take the point at No. 2 doubles.

The Hornets moved ahead 3-1 when Shane defeated Robets 6-0, 6-2 to take the win at No. 4 singles. Horner swept past Bruce Barber 6-2, 6-2 to claim the victory at No. 5 singles, but Lynchburg moved closer to the team win when Borga defeated Dillenbeck at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2.

The Eagles needed to sweep the final three matches left on the courts and they did so to pull out the victory. Sonet Gandhi got the win at No. 6, defeating Mullins 6-3, 6-3. johnson evened the team score at 4-4 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Nsoesie at the No. 3 slot.

The match was determined by the outcome at No. 2 singles where Rodgers held off Sablik 7-5, 7-6 to lift the Eagles to the 5-4 victory.
