INDIANAPOLIS – Bridgewater College junior Jamie Hiegel has qualified to compete as an individual in the NCAA Cross Country National Championships announced on Sunday.
In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions.
Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, sevenperson teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 16 teams. Sixteen additional teams were selected at-large.
Fifty-six individuals, the first seven student-athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, were selected to participate in each championship.
At the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championships, Hiegel ran a time of 24:22.1 to finish sixth overall to qualify for the National Championships and earn his third consecutive All-Region honor.
Hiegel has had an exceptional season and led the Eagles in every race he has competed in. He claimed the individual title at the ODAC Cross Country Championships, clocking a time of 24:35.40 to earn a spot on the All-Conference team.
He was also named ODAC runner of the week twice in the 2017 season. His first came after his second place finish with a time of 25:24.42 at the Don Cathcart Invitational. The second time was after his performance at the Oberelin Inter-Regional Rumble, when he finished 10th overall with a time of 25:40.0.
Principia College is hosting the championships Nov. 18 at the North Farm Facility in Elsah, Illinois. The men's race will begin at 12 p.m. Eastern time followed by the women's race at 1:15 p.m. Eastern time.
