The Bridgewater College Eagles stayed alive in the NCAA softball
tournament Saturday morning by eliminating Lynchburg College at
Salisbury University.
The Eagles took control with three runs in the bottom of the second
innings. Lauren Childress led off the inning with a double and
scored on a two-out single by Leah Cossentino. Hillary Rees then
belted a two-run homer to left to put BC on top 3-0.
Bridgewater added another run in the fourth when Rees singled and
moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Rees took third on a
groundout and scored on Emily Morris’ single, making the
score 4-0.
BC starter Ashley Gills dominated the Hornets over the first five
innings, allowing just two hits.
In the sixth, the Hornets mounted a rally when Lauren Duguay
reached on an error and Brittany Allsop singled. Audra Della
Rosa’s bunt single scored Duguay for Lynchburg’s first
run. Tara Campbell then grounded into a double play, but Allsop
scored from third, making the score 4-2.
Gills then retired the Hornets in order in the seventh to close out
the victory. Gills, now 15-4 on the season, allowed just four hits
and one earned run. She struck out four and did not walk a
batter.
Rees was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the
offense. Morris was 2-for-4 with one run batted in and Cossentino
was 1-for-2 with one run batted in.
With the victory, the Eagles, now 35-10, advance to a Saturday
afternoon matchup against Emory University. The game is scheduled
to begin at 2 p.m.
Emory defeated the Eagles in both ends of a doubleheader during the
regular season, winning 1-0 and 5-2.
