STARKVILLE, Miss. – After a 3-1 week, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team fell eight spots to 23rd in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Poll released on Wednesday afternoon.
The 23rd-ranked Eagles swept a doubleheader last week with Sweet Briar after splitting a conference twinbill on Wednesday afternoon at perennial power Lynchburg. The Eagles lost on a walkoff blast to the Hornets in the opener before pounding out 12 hits in a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
On the season, the Eagles have one win over a team currently ranked in the poll - No. 15 Cortland State. Bridgewater has defeated a total of two ranked teams on the year with Cortland State being ranked seventh and Coast Guard being ranked 10th when the Eagles picked up wins over the two teams on Spring Break.
Bridgewater currently owns a 24-4 overall record and is the lone Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) team that is ranked in this week's poll. Among the Atlantic region teams, the Eagles are the fifth-highest ranked team in this week's poll, behind Emory (No. 2), Christopher Newport (No. 10), Louisiana College (No. 18) and Salisbury (No. 19).
Six more wins propelled Linfield to another perfect week and another No. 1 ranking. The Wildcats are now 32-2 overall and will be tested this weekend by Northwest Conference foe Willamette before heading into the conference tournament in two weeks.
Much of the top five remains the same, including No. 2 Emory, who was idle this week. No. 3 Eastern Connecticut (17-1) and No. 4 Luther (22-4) jumped up a spot each after Coe dropped four spots to No. 7. The Kohawks were beaten twice at home in Iowa Conference play by No. 6 Central.
Bridgewater is in action on Wednesday afternoon at home when it hosts Shenandoah in a non-conference twinbill. First pitch from the BC Softball Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
