Softball Earns Fifth Seed for ODAC Tournament; Opens Friday Against Lynchburg

FOREST, Va. – After dropping a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon against regular-season champion Virginia Wesleyan, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team earned the fifth seed for the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament which opens play on Friday afternoon at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.

Bridgewater, Randolph-Macon and Lynchburg all ended the regular season in a tie for third place with a 12-6 record in conference play, but the Eagles fell to the fifth-seed after the conference tiebreak procedure.

The Eagles will begin their quest for the program's first conference championship on Friday at Noon when they do battle with perennial power Lynchburg on Field 3 at the Moyer Complex. Bridgewater and the Hornets split during their regular season meeting at Aubrey Moon Field on the Lynchburg campus. The Hornets won the opener by a 3-2 score on a walk-off homer before Bridgewater stormed back to claim the nightcap by a 6-2 tally.

Bridgewater owns an 8-6 record against the eight-team field, including sweeps over Emory & Henry and Randolph. Virginia Wesleyan is the lone team in the tournament to earn a sweep over the Eagles during the regular season.

The Marlins, winners of the 2011 ODAC softball championship, enters this year's tournament as the top seed after posting a 27-10 overall record and a 17-1 league mark following Wednesday's contests.  Roanoke College (25-9 overall, 13-5) earned the second seed outright.

The next three positions required the conference's tie-breaking procedures. Randolph-Macon College (28-12, 12-6), Lynchburg College (21-17, 12-6) and Bridgewater College (30-10, 12-6) split their series with each other during the regular season, requiring the ODAC's second tie-breaking step to determine the seeds. The Yellow Jackets will play from the third position while the Hornets will be situated as the fourth seed. The Eagles occupy the fifth seed.

Eastern Mennonite University (25-11, 9-9) secured its spot as the sixth seed with a regular-season sweep of Randolph-Macon earlier on Wednesday. Randolph College (18-18, 7-11) sits in the seventh spot, one spot higher than its position from 2011 when the WildCats earned a berth in the ODAC championship game.

The final slot also required the second step of the league's tie-breaking procedures. Emory & Henry College (13-23, 4-14) returns to the ODAC tournament for the first time since 2007 as the eighth seed.

The double-elimination tournament begins on Friday, April 27 and continues through Sunday, April 29.  All games will be played at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
