LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph College took both ends of a doubleheader Sunday from Bridgewater College, winning the first game 10-2 and the second game 5-3.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the opener with two runs in the top of the first. Lindsey Talley led off with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a wild pitch. Talley scored on a sacrifice fly by Victoria Gontarz for a 1-0 Eagles' lead. Mikalia Guard then doubled to right and moved to third on a groundout. Guard scored on a single by Carlita Tibbs, giving the Eagles a 2-0.
The lead didn't last long as the WildCats tied the score on Brittany Campbell's two-run single in the bottom of the first. Randolph grabbed the lead with two more runs in the second and pulled away to take the 10-2 victory.
In the second game, the Eagles erased a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the third inning. Jessica Dawson led off the inning with a walk and Ryan Kirtner reached on an error. Dawson scored on a single by Talley with Kirtner out at third on play. Talley, who took second on the throw when Kirtner was thrown out at third, scored on a single up the middle by Gontarz to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.
Randolph tied the score with a run in the bottom half of the third and then grabbed the lead with three runs in the fourth . Lauren Morris delivered the key hit in the fourth for the WildCats with a two-run single.
The Eagles pulled closer with a single run in the fifth. Kirtner singled to start the inning and Talley followed with a bunt single. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Gontarz and Kirtner scored when Guard popped out into foul territory down the right-field line, trimming the deficit to 5-3.
Bridgewater managed just one baserunner over the final two innings as the WildCats held on for the victory.
Talley was 2-for-3 in each game to lead the Eagles' offense. Tibbs finished the doubleheader with three hits in six at-bats.
