Eagles Split Doubleheader With Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - Bridgewater College split Thursday's doubleheader at Shenandoah, losing the first game 7-4 before winning the second game 7-0.

Carolyn Campbell went the distance in the circle in the second game, blanking the Hornets on just three hits to pick up the victory for the Eagles. Campbell struck out two and did not walk a batter,

The Eagles' offense provided all the run support Campbell would need with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Lindsey Talley led off with a single and Stephanie Carroll was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. With one out, Talley scored on Mariah Wharton's double for a 1-0 Eagles' lead. Mikalia Guard followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Carroll to make it 2-0.

Bridgewater added another run in the second and two more in third to increase the margin to 5-0.

With one out in the second, Sydney Layman singled and she moved into scoring position on Talley's two-out single to left. Carroll then singled to center, scoring Layman to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.

In the third, Wharton led off with a single to center and Guard followed with a run-scoring double to center, making the score 4-0. Guard moved to third on a single by Carlita Tibbs and scored when Campbell reached on an error, putting the Eagles up 5-0.

Bridgewater added its final two runs in the seventh when the Eagles loaded the bases and two runs scored on a throwing error for the final 7-0 margin.

The Eagles finished Game 2 with 14 hits. Carroll and Wharton each finished 3-for-4 at the plate while Talley and Layman had two hits each.

In the opener, the Eagles jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first. Talley and Carroll both reached base on infield errors and Wharton followed with a single to right, scoring Talley with the first run of the game. Guard reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Wharton scored on Keirston Kennedy's grounder, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Shenandoah got one run back in the bottom of the first and the Hornets took the lead with three runs in the third. Morgan Henley reached on an error to start the third inning and a single by Autumn Beasley put runners on the corners. Henley scored on a sacrifice fly by Maryann Hollen, tying the score at 2-2. Beasley scored on a double by Kayla O'Connell and O'Connell raced home on a single by Megan Wilk, giving the Hornets a 4-2 lead.

A run-scoring single by Wharton in the fifth pulled the Eagles to within 4-3, but the Hornets added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead 7-4. 

The Eagles added their final run in the seventh when Layman tripled and scored on a groundout by Talley.

Wharton led the offense in the opener, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Bridgewater, 14-16 overall and 2-8 in the ODAC, is back in action Sunday when the Eagles travel to play Emory & Henry.
