CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater Eagles swim team turned in a solid performance on the opening day of the 2011 ODAC/Atlantic States Championships. Bridgewater saw two school records fall in the five events contested.
Following the morning preliminary events, the Eagles got the first day of finals started with a fourth place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay race. The team of Danielle Dillon, Lauren Clymore, Michelle Caron and Carrie Crowther touched the pad in a time of 1:48.59.
After the opening event of the evening, Caron took home a 10th place overall finish in the finals of the 500 yard freestyle race. The freshman finished in a time of 5:36.46 to take home second place in the 'B' final. Caron was 11th overall following the morning prelims.
Sophomore Jeni Zeiler followed up Caron's performance with a record-setting finish in the 200 yard individual medley. Zeiler's time of 2:26.30 was good enough to snap her own record in the event while placing her 12th overall, and 4th in the 'B' final. Her finals time was over one-and-a-half seconds faster than her preliminary time.
Following Zeiler's record-setting performance, Crowther took home Bridgewater's first top eight finish of the meet in the individual events when Crowther finished in eighth place in the 50 yard freestyle event. Crowther set a new school record earlier in the day with a 25.38 second finish in the prelims, before finishing in a time of 25.51 seconds in the finals.
Finally, the Eagles wrapped up the day with a fourth place showing in the 400 yard medley relay. Bridgewater's quartet touched the pad in a time of 4:28.12 to improve by 16 seconds over its preliminary time.
Day two of action from the ODAC/Atlantic States Championships opens at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center with the 200 yard medley relay preliminary race. Finals open Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. for seven events.
