Fran Smith came to Bridgewater College as the swimming
program's first head coach and is beginning her third year at the
helm of the program.
Smith has been involved with the area swim scene for the past 15
years. She has coached the summer swim league team since 1993 with
great success. In the past 10 years, her team has won the league
championship meet five times.
She became the first head coach of the Turner Ashby High School
swim team in 2004. At Turner Ashby, she has had at least five
swimmers qualify for the state championship meet in each of the
past three years. In 2006, she coached the men's 50-yard freestyle
state champion.
Since 1975, Smith has taught Physical Education and Health in the
Rockingham County School System. She has taught at Montevideo
Middle School since 1992 and during her career has also coached
girls' basketball and boys' and girls' track and field.
Smith graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1971 and then
attended James Madison University where she graduated in 1975 with
a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical and Health Education K-12.
Morgan Cordle begins her first season as Bridgewater's assistant swim coach. Cordle will primarily coach the distance swimmers.
Cordle was instrumental in helping establish a varsity women's swim team at BC. In the fall of 2007 she was a member of the first varsity swim team in the history of Bridgewater College. She swam for two years and was captain for those two years also.
Cordle graduated from Jamestown High School and was a member of the swim team which won the Virginia State Swimming Championship in 2005. She also swam with Williamsburg Aquatics and Fort Eustis Aquatic Club.
A 2009 graduate of Bridgewater College, Cordle graduated with a
degree in International Studies with a minor in Social Work.
