Women's Basketball Championship Sunday


The Bridgewater College women's basketball team will try to win its second straight ODAC championship when the Eagles meet Randolph-Macon on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.

Bridgewater, the No. 4 seed reached the title game by knocking off the top-seeded Roanoke Maroons, 69-58, in Saturday's first semifinal.

Senior captains Jennifer Saunders and Rebecca Henderson led the Eagles with Saunders scoring a career-high 22 points and Henderson adding a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Randolph-Macon reached the title matchup by pulling away in the second half for a 75-55 victory over Virginia Wesleyan. Molly Ariail had a huge game for the Yellow Jackets with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the voting for the All-ODAC team. Ariail was named the ODAC Player of the Year and she was joined on the first team by teammates Amanda Hiltunen and Lindsay Riesbeck.

The Eagles are led by second-team All-ODAC pick Jordan Burkholder who averages 15.3 points per game.

Randolph-Macon won both regular season contests, defeating the Eagles 90-74 in Ashland and 75-65 at Nininger Hall.

The championship game can be heard locally on 550 AM. The pregame show begins at 12:30 p.m.
