Randolph-Macon holds off Eagles for title


Randolph-Macon College used a late 14-0 run to take control and defeat Bridgewater College, 69-65, in the ODAC Women's Basketball Championship game Sunday at the Salem Civic Center.

Randolph-Macon led by nine, 33-24, at the half, but the Eagles opened the second half with a 9-0 run to tie the score. Jordan Burkholder sandwiched a pair of layups around a 3-pointer from Jennifer Saunders and Emileigh Lambert hit two free throws to knot the score at 33-33.

The Eagles led seven times in the second half, but never by more than one point. The final lead came at 56-55 with 5:11 left when Lambert knocked down two foul shots.

Then, the Yellow Jackets put together their decisive run. Amanda Hiltunen swished a long 3-pointer to give R-MC the lead for good and Molly Ariail hit two foul shots to make it a four-point game, 60-56.

Hiltunen then knocked down another three-pointer and four straight foul shots to push the margin to 11. Lindsay Riesbeck added two free throws to make it 69-56 with 42 seconds left.

The Eagles scored nine points in the final 42 seconds making the final, 69-65.

Burkholder led the Eagles with 20 points and Emileigh added 14. Hiltunen scored 19 to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Saunders and Rebecca Henderson were named to the all-tournament team for the Eagles.

The Eagles finish the season with a 17-11 record.
