NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport outscored Bridgewater 19-6 in the second quarter to take a 41-16 halftime lead and the second-ranked Captains went on to defeat the Eagles 63-36 Wednesday evening in the Freeman Center.
A 3-pointer by Briana Moore and a baseline jumper by Sydni Carey kept the Eagles in touch early as they trailed 10-5 in the opening quarter. The Captains stretched the margin to double digits, leading 22-10 at the end of the first quarter. Rebecca Harvey scored five points to lead the Eagles in the opening quarter.
CNU pulled away in the second period as the Captains' pressure defense bottled up the Eagles. Bridgewater turned the ball over 25 times in the first half and hit just 7-of-18 field goal attempts.
The Eagles did a better job at the defensive end in the second half, holding the Captains to just 22 points. The Eagles also did a better job taking care of the basketball in the second half, turning it over 14 times.
Carey led the Eagles with 10 points and Harvey added nine.
Bridgewater held its own on the boards as the Captains held a slim 38-36 edge in rebounding. Moore and Jessalyn Monday each pulled down seven rebounds.
The Eagles are back in action this weekend at the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic. Bridgewater meets Methodist at 8:00 p.m.
