BRIDGEWATER - Bridgewater College overcame a sluggish first quarter Saturday to rally for a 67-58 victory over Roanoke College in ODAC women's basketball action.
Roanoke (6-11, 3-5 in the ODAC) surged to an eight-point lead, 19-11, after one quarter, but the Eagles answered with a strong second quarter to take the upper hand.
The Eagles opened the second quarter with buckets from Briana Moore and Jessalyn Monday to cut the lead in half. The Maroons regained an eight-point lead when Madeline Suhr converted a three-point play, giving Roanoke a 24-16 advantage with 5:10 left in the half.
Two free throws by Moore and a jumper by Madison Baum pulled the Eagles to with four, 24-20, but Chris Martin hit a jumper for Roanoke, pushing the Maroons lead to 26-20. Two free throws by Rebecca Harvey and a 3-pointer by Moore sliced the margin to a single point before a layup by Victoria Maxwell put the Maroons up 28-25 with 2:56 left in the second quarter.
A jumper by Monday cut the margin to one and a jumper by Moore gave the Eagles a 29-28 lead with 1:56 remaining in the half. Monday made 1-of-2 foul shots and Baum added 1-of-2 from the line to send the Eagles to the locker room with a 31-28 lead.
Two minutes into the third quarter, Baum converted a three-point play to push the lead to six and the Eagles maintained a margin between three and six points until a layup by Nina Novosel put Bridgewater ahead 41-33 midway through the third quarter.
A 6-1 Roanoke spurt closed the gap to three points, but a layup by Baum and a short jumper by Chyna Roberts pushed the margin back to seven, 46-39, entering the final quarter.
Bridgewater increased its lead to double digits when a layup by Novosel made the score 53-43 with 6:22 left in the game.
The margin was still 10 points when Moore tallied on a layup, making the score 62-52 with just 2:24 left.
The Maroons made one final push when 3-pointers by Martin and Molly Hassell trimmed the deficit to four points, 62-58, with 1:20 remaining.
Bridgewater then worked the shot clock and Moore took a pass from Baum and knocked down a clutch 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 65-58 Eagles' lead with less than a minute remaining. Hassell missed a 3-pointer on Roanoke's next possession and Moore grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Moore hit two foul shots, making the score 57-58, with just 29 seconds left.
Moore led the Eagles with a game-high 22 points and Baum, Bridgewater's 5-2 first-year guard, recorded her first career double with 10 points and 11 assists. Monday just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Suhr and Kristina Harrell each scored 11 points to pace the Maroons.
The victory evens Bridgewater's record at 8-8 overall and 4-4 in the ODAC. The Eagles return to action Wednesday evening when they host Randolph College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
