ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon outscored Bridgewater College 34-12 in the first quarter Tuesday night and the Yellow Jackets led the rest of the way in a 98-79 win.
After the Yellow Jackets opened the game with a 6-0 spurt, the Eagles closed the margin to 9-8. Jessalyn Monday put the Eagles on the board with a bucket, but a laup by Teal Reynolds and a free throw by Kelly Williams gave the hosts a 9-2 lead. Monday and Rebecca Harvey then knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Eagles to within one, 9-8, with six minutes left in the opening quarter.
The Yellow Jackets then took control with an 11-0 run to open up a 12-point, 20-8 lead. Sydni Carey hit a jumper for the Eagles with 3:32 left in the quarter, making the score 20-10 Williams and Monday traded hoops to keep the margin at 10 points, but Randolph-Macon closed the quarter with a 12-0 run to take a commanding 34-12 lead.
Bridgewater outscored the Yellow Jackets 67-64 over the final three quarters, but the first-quarter margin was too much to overcome.
Harvey scored 20 points to lead five Eagles in double figures. Briana Moore scored 13 points and Madison Baum added 11 points and six assists. Carey and Nina Novosel each finished the night with 10 points.
Williams, the ODAC leader in scoring and rebounding, led the Yellow Jackets with 27 points and 20 rebounds. Charlotte Woods added 20 points for the winners.
Bridgewater (9-12, 5-8 in the ODAC) forced 24 Randolph-Macon turnovers while turning the ball over just eight times, but the Yellow Jackets overcame the turnover differential by dominating the boards by a 56-30 margin.
The Eagles return to action Saturday afternoon when they host Hollins at 4:30 p.m.
