NELLYSFORD, Va. - Emmy Saatoff of Randolph Macon made a 10-foot putt on the final hole of the Shamokin Course at Wintergreen today to give the Yellow Jackets a narrow victory over the Eagles, 3-2 in match play.
The two-school match, a format not often used, was set up as a preview of the ODAC Championship which starts on April 23 at Wintergreen.
The closest match of the day featured Saatoff against Amanda Kelley. Kelley was two holes down in the match with four holes to play, but she won the 15th hole after a massive drive and a nice par. She then made a five footer to tie the 16th hole, and a four footer on the 17th hole to stay alive. She needed a win on the 18th hole for the two teams to tie the overall match, but Saatoff clinched with her 10-foot putt.
Christina Herbert drew a strong opponent in Liza Lewis, but Herbert played solidly and handled the match in twelve holes, finishing 7&6 including a birdie on the third hole. She only lost one hole in the match.
Playing in the same group, Danielle Cook faced Colleen Connolly of Macon. Cook made the turn 2-up and held on to close out her opponent on the 16th hole, 3&2.
Casey Gaffney had a nice stretch of four winning holes on the front nine against Jenny Jeu, but Jeu played tough on the back nine and beat Gaffney 4&3.
The final match featured Jesse Bartley against Aven Oliver. Bartley played tough in the middle of the round, but Oliver closed her out on the 14th hole, 6&4.
"We enjoyed getting to play in a match play tournament today on a pretty spring day," said head coach John Rogers. "We all wish we would have won the match, but the primary plan today was to get more familiar with the course as we approach the ODAC Championship. Now it's time to sharpen up and get ready for the main event."
The Eagles will be back in action April 9-10 at Glade Springs Resort.
