NELLYSFORD, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's golf team earned its second consecutive ODAC championship in dominating fashion, clinching a 50-stroke win on Tuesday at Wintergreen Resort.
Bridgewater shot a tournament-best 323 on a rainy, wet course for a three-day score of 983- exactly 50 strokes ahead of #17 Washington & Lee.
Christina Herbert won her second individual ODAC title, shooting 79 to beat W&L's Mary-Frances Hall by six strokes. She has now won seven of her 10 tournaments in 2016-17.
"We're really excited about getting our second win out here," said Herbert. "We had some bad weather but we were able to persevere through it and stay positive."
In her final collegiate round, senior Danielle Cook had the best front nine score of the field (37), finishing with an 80 to place third overall.
"Everything just seemed to be falling," said Cook. "My putts were going in, everything was just working- especially on the front nine."
Bridgewater had five of the top-nine finishers, with Amanda Kelley shooting 86 to finish in fifth place, and Casey Gaffney carding an 84 to place seventh.
Freshman Jesse Bartley had her most impressive collegiate round, battling the elements to shoot 80- equaling Cook for third-best round of the day- and charging into a ninth-place finish.
Meghan Morris carded a 115, her best round of the tournament.
"We tried to prepare all week for this, but I'm still pleasantly surprised," said head coach John Rogers, describing the team practicing shots for poor weather conditions. "I don't know how they pulled this off as well as they did. They reached in deep and pulled off some great stuff."
"Last year was sweet because it was our first graduating class and it was important to get them a ring before they left, and we were able to do that," Rogers added. "This year, on paper, we were probably giving up 30 shots over three days, so to turn that around and win by 50 shots is pretty incredible."
With the ODAC still not holding an automatic bid to the NCAA golf championships, Bridgewater's season is likely over as a team. However, Herbert is expected to receive an individual selection to next month's national tournament.
