BUENA VISTA, Va. - Bridgewater's Katherine Wight scored on a set piece in the 72nd minute Wednesday night to lift the Eagles to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Southern Virginia in women's soccer action. The victory was the first of the season for the Eagles and evened their record at 1-1-1 on the season.
Bridgewater wasted little time in getting on the board as the Eagles took the lead just 1:05 into the first half. Sarah Brennan sent a long pass upfield to Anna Sobus for the goal and a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.
The Eagles carried the lead into the halftime break, but the hosts evened the score early in the second half when Kora Jewell blasted a shot from 25 yards out, through traffic and into the net to tie the score at 1-1.
Bridgewater scored the game-winner on a corner kick. Grayson Mathews took the corner and Wight put the ball into the back of the goal to put the Eagles on top 2-1. The goal was Wight's second of the season.
The Knights put one shot on goal in the final 18 minutes but Bridgewater keeper Hayley Talbott was there for the save as the Eagles closed out the one-goal victory.
The Eagles finished the contest with a 13-4 edge in shots and 10-0 margin in corner kicks.
Bridgewater returns to action Saturday afternoon for the first home game of the season as the Eagles host Frostburg State in non-conference action.
