FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater Eagles women's tennis team opened the 2011 season on Saturday at the University of Mary Washington as part of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
In singles play, sophomore Katie Gordon went 1-1 while freshman Marla O'Bryan turned in an 0-2 day in the championship singles division. Gordon was defeated by ninth seed Sonja Meighan and later won a tight 9-8 (8-4) victory in the first round of consolation play. O'Bryan dropped a 6-1, 6-0 matchup to seventh-seeded Lia Carlson before falling by an 8-0 tally in the opening round of the consolation bracket.
Sophomore Katy Bergey turned in a 1-1 day in the Blue 1 singles division. Bergey was victorious by an 8-3 tally in the round of 16 before falling in a 7-5, 6-2 affair in the quarterfinals.
In action in the Blue 2 singles division, sophomore Brittany Wilson went 0-2 on the day. Wilson fell by a tight 8-5 tally in the round of 16 before withdrawing due to injury in the first round of consolation play.
Junior Olivia Stone turned in a 1-1 performance on the day in the Blue 3 singles division. Stone fell in the round of 16 by an 8-3 margin before claiming an easy 8-1 victory in the first consolation round.
Senior Ally McConaughy also competed for the Eagles and fell by an 8-1 tally in her lone match of the day in the Blue 4 singles division.
Turning to doubles action, Bergey and Gordon teamed up in the championship doubles round and went 0-2 on the day. The tandem fell by an 8-2 margin in the round of 32 before dropping an 8-1 affair in the first round of consolation play to the fifth seed.
In Blue 1 doubles, O'Bryan and Wilson teamed up to post an 8-4 loss in the round of 16.
Finally, McConaughy and Stone went 1-1 on the day in the Blue 2 doubles division. The duo turned in an 8-3 win in the round of 16 before falling by an 8-2 tally in the quarterfinals.
