Bridgewater, Va.- The Bridgewater College Volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season in its home opener and first ODAC match against Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday night. The Eagles lost to the Marlins by a score of 3-1 (24-26, 13-25, 25-22, 23-25).
Bridgewater had won its first eight games of the season after sweeping their games in the Puerto Rico Classic Tournament and the Roanoke College Maroon Classic Tournament.
Bridgewater now falls to 8-1 while Virginia Wesleyan improves its record to 6-4.
Virginia Wesleyan was led by Elizabeth Britton and her 13 kills, as well as Doneisha Hall who dished out ten kills to go along with 11 digs. Allison Mackley was the team's defensive specialist, racking up 24 digs.
Bridgewater hurt themselves with a season-high 33 errors and were set-back in key situations with eight service errors.
After a tight first set, the Eagles lost the second set by a double-digit margin, but turned it around in the third set.
A big block by Hamra and Madison Haynes late in third set gave BC a 23-20 lead. Virginia Wesleyan made it close, but Bridgewater grabbed a 24-22 advantage on a big kill by Studtmann.
The Marlins took back the momentum in the fourth set, going on a 6-0 rally to take an early 6-1 lead. The Eagles battled back, cutting the deficit to 2 points, but were never able to recover and lost by a score of 25-23.
The Eagles will head to Roanoke on Friday to compete in their first ODAC road contest of the year. The match is set to start at 6:30pm.
