EMORY, VA. - The Bridgewater College Volleyball team improved to 14-4 on the year after defeating Emory and Henry Tuesday night by a score of 3-1 (25-10, 25-27, 25-16, 28-26).
Rachel Gaston and Deja Booker combined for 34 of Bridgewater's 56 total kills. Gaston led with 18 while Booker had 16. Victoria Wilson set the pace with 29 assists while Carleigh Studtmann was a force with five blocks. Macon Frey and Jenna Hamra were strong defensively, Frey had 16 digs while Hamra had 15.
Bridgewater went on a 5-0 rally early in the first set and had no problems from there, keeping a strong lead and taking the set on two final kills by Gaston.
The teams were back-and-fourth for the entire second set. Emory and Henry scored four straight points at the end of the set to take a 23-22 lead. Bridgewater tied it up at 25 on an error by Emory and Henry but two kills from Tori Holmberg allowed Emory and Henry to take the set.
BC came back strong in the third set and took a 12-5 lead on back-to-back kills by Studtmann and Madison Haynes. Gaston again got the final kill of the set, the Eagles taking it 25-16.
Bridgewater had a solid lead in the fourth set until Emory and Henry went on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 24-23. The Eagles were able to hold off and grab the final two points on kills by Allison Clark and Deja Booker.
The Eagles will be back tomorrow night for a home game against Mary Baldwin beginning at 7:00 p.m.
