Women's Cross Country Opens with Strong Win

Bridgewater, Va. - For their first race of the 2017 season, the Bridgewater College women's cross country team hosted the third annual Eagles Cross Country Challenge held on the BC Campus Friday afternoon.

The women's team looked great in their opening meet as they had seven runners finish in the top-10 and scored 16 points to finish first out of four teams.

Bridgewater's top four runners ran as a pack, finishing just seconds behind each other. Sophomore Calista Ariel was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 17:04.39.  Freshman English Jackson finished less than a second behind her at 17:04.88. Junior Jenna Rea and senior Scarlett Bavin finished third and fourth with times of 17:06.63 and 17:07.29, respectively.

Senior Emily Young (17:23.15), junior Sidney Hinkle (17:41.59) and freshman Octavia Coleman (17:47.33) finished sixth, seventh, and eighth to round out the top-ten for the Eagles.

Gabby Morris was 16th (19:32.19) and sophomore Emily Valle (20:11.44) finished 20th.

Mary Baldwin finished second as a team with a score of 56, while Christendom was third with a score of 74, and Sweet Briar finished fourth with a score of 101.

The Eagles now prepare themselves as they travel to Virginia Tech on Sept. 15 to compete in the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. The meet is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
