BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College athletic department set new standards for All-American selections after a banner weekend at the NCAA track & field championships.

The most All-Americans in a single year for the Bridgewater athletic department was previously in 2001-02, with seven individuals being recognized.

The football team went to the Stagg Bowl that season and had five All-Americans- running back Davon Cruz, offensive linemen Mike Day and Matt Huffman, linebacker Lonnie Parker and quarterback Jason Lutz.

That winter, Kyle Williford was a consensus first team All-American in basketball while Sarah Hagood was an honorable mention honoree by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Cruz added an All-American honor on the track in the indoor 55 meters.

Counting Cruz' two separate sport selections, and this year's men's track & field 4x100m relay as one, the Eagles matched that 2001-02 total this season with eight different All-Americans. Counting indivuiduals however, Bridgewater saw a new high of 10 student-athletes reach that elite status.

The list started in the fall as volleyball earned their first two All-Americans in program history in junior hitter Rachel Gaston and senior setter Victoria Wilson.

Davonta Womack, who won the outdoor national championship at 100 meters, earned his first of four 2018-19 All-American honors in the 60 meter dash at NCAA Indoors in the winter. Emily Valle did the same in the 60 meter hurdles.

Six names were recently added to the list in a span of less than a week. ODAC leading scorer Eric Husselbaugh became the first All-American for the men's lacrosse program in just their seventh year of competition, earning honorable mention laurels from the USILA.

Distance runners Jamie Hiegel (10,000 meters) and Calista Ariel (3,000 meter steeplechase) earned their first career All-American honors on the track this past weekend. Diante Cannon, Alex Galloway and Dirk Jones joined Womack for an All-American finish in the 4x100m relay.
