BRIDGEWATER, Va. - In the squad's 2010 home
opener, the Bridgewater Eagles took advantage of seven Hood miscues
to earn a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Blazers. Bridgewater
won game one by a 5-4 score, before taking the down the Blazers in
game two by a 9-1 tally in five innings.
Bridgewater got off to a hot start in game one as the Blazers'
starting pitcher Bridgette Ringley hit three batters and walked
another leading to a pair of BC runs in the bottom of the first.
With a 2-0 lead in hand for the Eagles, the Blazers used an
error on pitcher Ashley Gills to plate one run, cutting the BC lead
in half at 2-1 after 1 ½ innings of play.
Hood held the Eagles' offense in check in the bottom of the
second before plating another run in the top of the third off of a
pair of BC miscues to knot the score at two each after three
innings.
Following a scoreless fourth, Hood took the lead in the top of
the fifth after an Erin McNally double plated Brittani Jones to
give the Blazers a 3-2 advantage.
Bridgewater responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the
frame when an Angela Spinelli sacrifice fly to left field scored
Hillary Rees from third to tie the game up at three runs apiece.
Hood again answered with another run in the top of the sixth to
take a 4-3 lead before a pair of Blazers errors turned into another
BC run to knot the game up at four heading into the seventh.
Gills worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the
seventh to give the Eagles a chance to end things in the home half
of the seventh.
Junior Lauren Childress led the inning off with a double down
the left field line to give the Eagles as early base-runner with no
outs. Following a Spinelli walk and wild pitch which put runners at
second and third, a pop out and groundout brought the game to
within one out of extras.
With a 3-2 count, Kristen Combs watched ball four come across
the inside of the plate to walk the bases loaded. Hood reliever
McNally then proceeded to walk in Heather Jenkins to give the
Eagles a hard-fought 5-4 victory.
Four Eagles had a hit apiece to lead the offense.
Gills earned her first win of the year, allowing four runs on
five hits while striking out seven.
Game two started as a pitcher's duel before a Hood run in the
third broke the early deadlock to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead after
2 ½ innings of play.
Bridgewater responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of
the third to take a 2-1 advantage into the fourth.
Jenkins, Bridgewater's game-two hurler shut down Hood in the
fourth before an offensive explosion gave the freshman a cushion in
the bottom of the frame.
BC exploded for a five-run fourth inning as the Eagles batted
around the lineup to take a 7-1 lead after four innings.
Following another scoreless inning for the Blazers, the Eagles
put the game away in the fifth off of a walk-off two run home run
from Emily Morris in the bottom of the sixth to put the eight run
rule into effect, giving the Eagles a 9-1 victory over the visiting
Blazers.
Childress led the Eagles at the plate in game two with a 2-for-3
outing. Childress knocked in three runs to lead the Eagles.
Jenkins picked up her first career victory after allowing one
run on five hits in her debut. Jenkins struck out four along the
way.
Bridgewater is back in action on Monday when the team opens play
at the Snowbird Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. against Penn-State
Harrisburg.
