Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On Saturday afternoon, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team used late game heroics in both halves of a double dip to sweep the visiting Hood Blazers. Bridgewater took game one by an 8-0 score in five innings and defeated the Blazers 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap.
In game one, Bridgewater got on the board first when junior Hillary Rees scored on a passed ball after a pair of stolen bases got her to third base to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Later in the inning, an Angela Spinelli single plated sophomore Aven Thomas to put Bridgewater up 2-0 after the first inning.
Over the next two frames, the two pitchers were effective, keeping the score at a 2-0 Eagles advantage before a Heather Jenkins home run over the left field fence extended the Bridgewater lead to 3-0 after four frames.
Jenkins mowed through the Blazers in order in the top of the fifth before the Eagles bats opened things up in the bottom of the inning.
Rees opened the inning with a walk, before stealing second and scoring on a Thomas double to push the lead to 4-0.
Two batters later, Lauren Childress reached via error to put runners on the corners for the Eagles.
During the ensuing at bat, a wild pitch allowed Thomas to score from third and moved Childress to second putting the Eagles ahead 5-0.
Spinelli followed things up with a walk before sophomore Amber Martsin drilled a single to left field, pushing in Childress and putting the Eagles up 6-0.
With two outs on the board, Jenkins hit a laser to right field, where the fielder couldn't get a handle on it, allowing Marstin and pinch runner Leah Cossentino to score, pushing the lead to 8-0, ending the contest.
Rees and Thomas paced the Eagles offense as both went 1-for-2 at the plate. Rees also swiped three bases in the win.
Jenkins picked up her first win of the season, tossing four innings of shutout ball. Jenkins allowed just one hit and struck out three in the win.
For Hood, Gafner got the lone hit in the loss, while Bridgette Ringley picked up the loss in the circle, tossing 4.2 innings of work, allowing four all eight runs on five Bridgewater hits.
Game two saw a much different start, as the Blazers tagged a number of runs on the Eagles early.
In the top of the first, Hood got on the board when a Kelly Gafner double down the left field line plated leadoff hitter Casey Dunn to put the Blazers up 1-0.
Hood wasn't finished, because during the next at-bat, a single by Jacquie Wenzel drove in Gafner and pushed the early Hood advantage to 2-0.
In the bottom part of the inning, Bridgewater responded when an error by the first baseman allowed a sprinting Rees to score from third base, cutting the Blazers lead to 2-1 after one frame.
Following two scoreless innings, Bridgewater knotted the game up at two each when a Cossentino single drove in pinch runner Kristen Combs.
Bridgewater took the lead during the next at-bat when a Rees double through the left side plated Cossentino and Drew Rutledge, putting the Eagles ahead 4-2 after four innings of action.
The Eagles switched pitchers in the top of the fifth, as Marstin blew through the Hood lineup, putting the Blazers down 1-2-3.
Bridgewater poured in more offense in the bottom of the stanza when Melanie Lamb put a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence, increasing the Eagles lead to 6-2.
Marstin again mowed down the Blazers in the top of the sixth, before an offensive onslaught put the game away in the home half of the inning.
Back-to-back singles, drove in two runs to push the lead to 8-2 before a wild pitch allowed Emily Morris to score from third, bring the game to a 9-2 Eagles advantage.
Following a Jenkins walk, Lamb was drilled by a 1-0 pitch, walking in Childress from third, finalizing the scoring at a 10-2 tally, completing the doubleheader sweep of the Blazers.
Rees and Lamb were both perfect for the Eagles in the nightcap. Rees went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and two RBI, while Lamb went 2-for-2 with a longball and the base-loaded hit by pitch in the sixth.
In the circle, Summer Ramsey picked up the win. Ramsey tossed four innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits. Marstin pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits while punching out three.
Wenzel led the way for the Blazers in game two with a 1-for-2 outing.
In the circle, Ringley tossed 5.1 innings of work, allowing all 10 runs on nine hits.
Bridgewater is back in action next Monday when the team travels to Kissimmee, Fla. For the Rebel Spring Games.
