Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Behind a pair of outstanding offensive performances, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team dropped Thomas More by a 9-1 score before taking down Geneva in the nightcap by a 9-0 score on the first day of competition at the Rebel Spring Games.
Bridgewater got on the board in the first inning when an Emily Morris single drove in junior Hillary Rees to put the Eagles up 1-0 early.
Following a scoreless frame from the Saints, the Eagles knocked in three runs in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Rees got the scoring started with a triple to left field, before an error on the shortstop allowed Aven Thomas to reach first base safely, scoring Rees from third. Morris reached base on an error by the right fielder, driving in Thomas, to net the third run of the frame, putting Bridgewater up 4-0 after two.
The Eagles continued to mow through the Thomas More lineup in the second, before a Morgan Williams single drove in freshman Kasey Anderson to push the lead to 5-0.
Thomas More responded with a run of its own to chip Bridgewater's lead to 5-1 before the Eagles answered with an Amber Marstin blast over the center field fence to push the lead back to five at a 6-1 margin.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, before the Eagles put three runs on the board in the sixth to push the lead to 9-1.
Senior Angela Spinelli popped a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Morris to put the lead to a 7-1 Bridgewater advantage.
Bridgewater rounded out the scoring on a two-RBI single from Heather Jenkins to finalize the scoring at a 9-1 margin after Jenkins slammed the door on the Saints in the home half of the frame.
Rees led the offense with a 2-for-5 outing. The junior tallied a pair of runs and drove one in for the Eagles offense.
Thomas recorded the win, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out three Thomas More batters.
In the nightcap, Bridgewater got on the board first before the two teams settled in, in the second and third innings.
Bridgewater used small ball to get on the board, when the Eagles pulled a double steal, forcing the throw to second which allowed Morris to score from third base.
Over the next two innings, both pitchers shut down the opposing offenses before Bridgewater opened up the offense with eight runs in the fourth.
Four players recorded two hits in game two, led by Jenkins' 2-for-2 performance with a pair of RBI.
Jenkins picked up the win in the circle, tossing a four-hit shutout. The sophomore also struck out six batters in the win.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday when it plays Bluffton and Ursinus. Action against Bluffton is slated to open to 9:00 a.m. before the Eagles take on Ursinus at 1:00 p.m. at the Fortune Road Softball Complex.
