Five Homers Power Softball to Doubleheader Sweep Over Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – Behind 31 runs on 39 hits across the two games, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team dispatched the host Emory & Henry Wasps by a 13-0 score in the first game before dropping the Wasps by an 18-0 tally in the nightcap to pick up the daily sweep. Both games were called after five innings of play.

In the opener, the Eagles got two quick outs before loading the bases for catcher Sarah Heretick. Heretick drilled a 2-1 pitch over the outfield fence, clearing the bases to put Bridgewater up 4-0.

Starting pitcher Heather Jenkins put the Wasps down in order in the bottom of the first before the Eagles tallied three more runs to blow things open in the second.

Junior Hillary Rees got the scoring started with a single down the left field line, driving in Kasey Anderson to put the Eagles up 5-0. Rees scored two batters later on an Aven Thomas stolen base, heading home on the throw to put Bridgewater ahead 6-0.

The Eagles finalized the scoring off of an Emily Morris double to push Bridgewater to a 7-0 lead after two innings of play.

Emory & Henry again went down 1-2-3 in the second before the Eagles exploded for five runs in the top of the third. Senior Lauren Childress highlighted the inning with a two-run blast over the left-center field fence as Bridgewater took a 12-0 lead after two-and-a-half. 

In the home half of the third, the Wasps threatened but left two runners on base as the Eagles maintained a 12-0 lead.

Both teams were held off of the scoreboard in the fourth before Bridgewater used a Childress single to plate Leigh Lam, pushing the Eagles lead to 13-0 in the fifth.

Emory & Henry was mowed down in order in the bottom of the frame, giving Bridgewater a 13-0 win in five innings.

At the plate, Childress' 4-for-4 game led the way for the Eagles offense. The senior scored twice and drove in three runs. Fellow senior Emily Morris was also perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBI.

Bridgewater pounded out 18 hits in the win, including six extra-base hits.

Jenkins earned the shutout win for the Eagles in the circle. The sophomore tossed five innings of one-hit ball to post her conference-leading 12th win of the season.

Emory and Henry scattered just one hit at the plate, while starting pitcher Jennifer True picked up the loss in the circle.

Game two saw a similar start for the Eagles as the team plated six runs to open the contest.

Bridgewater hit through the lineup, pounding out eight hits in the top of the first to take a 6-0 lead into the bottom half of the frame.

Emory & Henry went down in order in the first before both teams were held scoreless in the second stanza.

The Eagles extended their lead in the third off of a Rees double down the left field line which drove in Anderson to push Bridgewater to a 7-0 advantage.

In the home half of the third, the Wasps stranded two base runners, keeping the contest at a 7-0 Bridgewater lead before the Eagles exploded for their biggest inning of the day in the fourth.

Bridgewater again batted through the lineup in the fourth tallying eight runs in the process, with homeruns from the bats of Melanie Lamb and Emily Morris highlighting the high-scoring inning for the Eagles as the team took a 15-0 lead after four.

Emory and Henry went down 1-2-3 in the fourth before Bridgewater scored three runs in the top of the fifth to finalize the scoring, giving the Eagles an 18-0 victory.

Anderson's 3-for-3 game paced the Eagles in game two. The freshman scored two runs and drove in another from the No. 9 spot in the lineup. Morris and Rees chipped in 3-for-4 games at the plate, with Rees scoring twice and Morris scoring three times.

Sophomore hurler Amber Marstin earned the win in the circle, going the distance to earn the shutout victory.

Bridgewater is back in action on Sunday afternoon when the team heads to York (Pa.) for a twinbill with the Spartans.
