Softball Splits On Day Two of Rebel Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – On day two of competition at the 2013 Rebel Spring Games, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team split its contests with Mount Union and Coast Guard. The Eagles fell to the Purple Raiders in the opener by a 3-0 score before topping the Bears in the second game of the day by a 6-4 tally.

In the opener, the Eagles and Mount Union locked up in a pitcher's duel early before the Purple Raiders tallied runs in the sixth and seventh to earn the victory.

Both teams had base runners in the early innings, but neither could plate a runner as the game went through five innings with no score.

In the top of the sixth, Mount Union put a runner on board to lead off the frame with a single from the bat of Kristen Gromes. After being sacrificed to second base, Gromes was driven in on a Shelby Carmichael single up the middle as the Purple Raiders jumped in front by a 1-0 score. Mount Union added a run later in the inning off of a Megan Okuda double to take a 2-0 lead after five and a half.

Bridgewater went down in order in the sixth before Mount Union added a run in the seventh to round out the scoring. Alex Mayo tagged a single down the right field line before being driven in two batters later on a Gromes single to finalize the scoring and hand Mount Union a 3-0 victory.

Freshman Karie Burgess tallied Bridgewater's lone hit in the game with a single in the first inning. Fellow freshman Brianna Cox picked up the loss in her first career start. The Bumpass, Va. native allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two in a strong outing for the Eagles.

Mayo and Gromes each tallied two-hit games to pace the way for Mount Union. Rachel McAninch picked up the win, tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout. McAninch struck out 14 Bridgewater batters in the win.

In the nightcap, the Eagles got on the board in the first and third before blowing the game open in the fifth and seventh.

Junior Kasey Anderson opened the game with a single before she swiped second base to put an early runner in scoring position for the Eagles. Anderson was pushed to third on a Burgess groundout before a Melanie Lamb single through the left side drove in the Chatham, Va. native to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.

Starting pitcher Heather Jenkins held Coast Guard off of the scoreboard in the first and second before the Eagles added an insurance run in the third.

Freshman Haley Lloyd led off the third with a walk and was pushed to second on a Burgess sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position with one out. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Lloyd was pushed home on a sacrifice fly to center field from Lamb to extend the Bridgewater lead to 2-0 after two and a half innings of play.

Coast Guard pushed across a run in the fourth inning to trim the Eagles' lead to 2-1 before Bridgewater added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.

Anderson reached on a fielding error to open the fifth before swiping second and advancing to third on a Lloyd sacrifice bunt. The junior was plated during the ensuing at-bat on a squeeze bunt from Burgess to extend the Bridgewater advantage to 3-1. Burgess scored three batters later when Jenkins reached on an error, allowing the freshman to score, building the lead to 4-1.

Following a scoreless sixth inning from both teams, Bridgewater again tallied a pair of runs to blow the game open and own a five-run lead.

Lutz belted a one-out single up the middle to get the bats going for the Eagles before junior Brea Hinegardner followed with a single to put runners at first and second. Jenkins followed with a groundout, pushing Lutz and Hinegardner to second and third before senior Aven Thomas drilled a double to right-center field, scoring Lutz and Hinegardner to push the Bridgewater lead to 6-1.

Coast Guard wouldn't lay down without a fight in the seventh. The Bears netted three runs in the inning before a line out and a groundout ended the game, handing Bridgewater a 6-4 victory.

Lutz and Hinegardner each tallied two-hit efforts for the Eagles in the win. Lamb and Thomas each drove in two RBI to aid the Bridgewater offense.

In the circle, Jenkins picked up the win, allowing four runs on nine hits.

Coast Guard was led by a 3-for-4 effort from Jessie Richardson. Freshman Sammy Yuknat was tagged with the loss after allowing all six runs on 10 hits.

Bridgewater is back in action on Thursday afternoon against fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan and Washington College. First pitch against Illinois Wesleyan is set for 3 p.m. while the Eagles take on the Shoremen at 5 p.m.
