Softball Sweeps York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa.  – In the final non-conference twinbill of the season, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team tallied 32 hits on the afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of York College (Pa.) Bridgewater pounded out 17 hits in the first game as the Eagles rolled to a 10-4 victory before tallying 15 hits in the nightcap to earn a 9-7 win.

In the first, junior Kasey Anderson led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base to put an early runner in scoring position. Freshman Brooke Throckmorton belted a single up the middle to score Anderson and put the Eagles in front, 1-0.

Senior Melanie Lamb reached on a fielder's choice before Aven Thomas reached on a walk to put runners at first and second. Junior Brea Hinegardner belted a single up the middle and Lamb scored from second with the aid of an error on the York College center fielder as the Eagles took a 2-0 advantage.

York tallied a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning to cut the Bridgewater lead in half at a 2-1 tally.

After a scoreless second inning, the Eagles blew the contest wide open with a five-run third. Freshman Karie Burgess singled to open the inning and was pushed home on a Throckmorton single as the Eagles took a 3-1 lead. Lamb followed with a two-run blast down the left field line to extend the Bridgewater lead to 5-1, forcing a Spartans pitching change. Thomas kept things going with an infield single before Leigh Lam blasted a homer to left two batters later to build a 7-1 Bridgewater lead.

Lam drove in another run in the top of the fourth when she doubled to the left field gap, plating Thomas to push the lead to 8-1.

York answered the Bridgewater run in the top of the frame with one of its own in the bottom of the inning on a fielder's choice groundout to chip the lead to 8-2.

The Spartans added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer from Payton Hill as the Bridgewater lead dwindled to an 8-4 tally.

Both teams went down scoreless in the sixth before the Eagles tallied a pair of runs in the seventh to finalize the scoring. Following a pop up to open the frame, Anderson and Burgess singled to put runners at first and second before an error on the York shortstop allowed Anderson to score, extending the Bridgewater lead to 9-4. Burgess scored on a groundout from Lamb during the next at-bat to round out the scoring and hand Bridgewater a 10-4 win.

Hinegardner and Anderson each tallied 3-for-4 games in the win, while Lamb and Lam registered three RBI each to help lead the Bridgewater offense. Bridgewater's starting lineup all recorded a hit in the opener.

Starting pitcher Heather Jenkins secured her 12th win of the year after allowing four runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort. Of the four runs allowed, just one was earned as the Eagles committed three errors in the win.

York was paced by Hill's 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

Cory Urkuski picked up the loss after allowing five runs on six hits across two innings of work.

York committed four errors in the opener.

In the nightcap, both teams went down without a run in the first and second before the Eagles exploded for four runs in the top of the third. Burgess drew a walk to lead off the inning before a Throckmorton double to the left field gap plated Burgess to put Bridgewater in front, 1-0. Lamb answered with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Following a line out, Hinegardner belted a three-run homer to left to hand the Eagles a 4-0 advantage.

York nicked the Eagles for a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the Bridgewater lead to 4-1 after three complete.

Bridgewater added two more runs in the fourth to build out a 6-1 lead. Following a fly out to open the inning, Anderson singled through the right side and moved to second on a wild pitch. Throckmorton drove in Anderson with a double to center before scoring a batter later on a Lamb double to right center to put the Eagles up by five.

Lam singled to the shortstop to open the fifth before being tossed out at second on a Sarah Goodman fielder's choice. Goodman scored two batters later when Anderson drilled a triple to left to put the Eagles up 7-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans exploded for four runs to trim the Bridgewater lead to 7-5 after five frames. The first two Spartans batters were put away in order in the bottom of the fifth before the floodgates opened to the tune of four runs.

Bridgewater answered with two runs in the sixth to push the lead to 9-5. Thomas reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Hinegardner pushed a double to right center to extend the Bridgewater lead to 8-5. Lam rounded out the scoring for the Eagles when a single and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed pinch runner Kelsey Limbert to score and build out a 9-5 Bridgewater lead.

York tagged a single run on the board in the sixth to draw the contest to three runs, 9-6, heading to the final inning.

The Eagles went down without a run in the top of the inning before the Spartans looked to respond in a big way and take the win in the bottom of the frame. York tallied a run in the bottom of the inning and worked the bases loaded with two outs before Thomas notched a strike out to end the game and hand the Eagles a 9-7 victory.

Throckmorton and Lamb each tallied three hits games in the nightcap while Hinegardner drove in four runs in the win.

Thomas secured the victory in the circle, allowing three runs on four hits over six innings of action. The senior re-entered in the circle in the sixth in relief of Brianna Cox who was tagged for four runs in just one inning of action.

Bell tallied a 3-for-3 game for the Spartans offense while Morgan Levine picked up the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits over 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

Bridgewater wraps up the regular season on Sunday with a conference twinbill against Guilford. First pitch in game number one of the day is set for 2 p.m. Sunday's doubleheader also marks Senior Day for the Eagles.
