Box Score 2 EMORY, Va. - The Bridgewater Eagles softball team ran its winning streak to eight games on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over Emory & Henry in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) twinbill on the road. In the sweep, Bridgewater drilled six homers.
Bridgewater rolled to an easy 8-0 victory in five innings in game number one of the day before exploding at the plate with five home runs in a 14-6 win in the finale.
The Eagles blew the game open early behind a three-run first inning. Junior Kasey Anderson singled to open the frame and was pushed in two batters later on a Karie Burgess single to right center as Bridgewater built a 1-0 advantage. Senior Aven Thomas cracked an infield single to put runners on the corners before junior Brea Hinegardner drew a two-out walk to load the bases. Senior Heather Jenkins helped her own cause when she followed with a two-RBI single to put the Eagles out in front, 3-0.
Anderson singled again in the second and moved to third on back-to-back wild pitches. The junior scored when a dropped fly ball by the Emory & Henry left fielder during the at-bat of Burgess allowed Anderson to score from third to extend the Bridgewater lead to 4-0.
Bridgewater pushed its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third when Thomas led off the inning with a double and was plated when Hinegardner drilled a pitch over the right field fence to put the Eagles up by six runs.
Jenkins held Emory & Henry in check in the third and fourth before the Eagles put the game away in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Senior Leigh Lam drilled a pitch over the center field fence to put the Eagles up 7-0. Bridgewater then proceeded to load the bases and Burgess drew a bases-loaded walk to push the Eagles out to an 8-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles put Emory & Henry down without a run as Bridgewater rolled to an 8-0 victory in the opener.
Anderson, Thomas and Lam each turned in two-hit games for the Eagles in the win as Bridgewater pounded out 11 hits in the opener.
Jenkins tossed a complete-game, three hit-shutout to earn her 11th win of the season.
Three Emory & Henry players had a hit each for the Wasps while Katie Grimm picked up the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs on 10 hits across four and a third innings of work.
In the nightcap, Bridgewater poured it on late and used five home runs to cruise to a 14-6 victory.
Bridgewater used a two-run first to open up an early lead on the Wasps in game two. Anderson led off the inning with a walk and was plated on a Burgess single to put the Eagles out in front by a 1-0 score.
Following a single from Brooke Throckmorton and a Thomas fielder's choice, Hinegardner stung a single up the middle to score Burgess and build a 2-0 Bridgewater lead.
Emory & Henry finally got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as the Wasps knotted the game up, 2-2. The Wasps added two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead after three complete.
Bridgewater tied the game up at four runs each after posting a pair in the top of the fourth. Goodman singled and moved to second base on the throw to put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Anderson proceeded to reach on a muffed throw by the first baseman and Goodman moved home to trim the Emory & Henry lead to 4-3. Freshman Haley Lloyd was hit by pitch during her ensuing at-bat before another Burgess single plated Anderson to tie the game up, 4-4.
In the top of the fifth, Bridgewater's offensive outburst began as the Eagles took the lead for good at a 7-4 tally. Thomas opened the inning with a double prior to Hinegardner reached on an error as the Eagles had runners at first and second with no outs. Jenkins sacrificed Thomas and Hinegardner to second and third before Lam belted a three-run blast over the center field fence to put Bridgewater out in front, 7-4.
Emory & Henry answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Bridgewater lead to 7-6 but it was as close as the Wasps would get.
Thomas led off the sixth with a solo shot to left while Hinegardner followed with a double to put another runner in scoring position with no outs. Three batters later, Goodman drilled a pitch over the center field fence, scoring Hinegardner in the process to build out a 10-6 Bridgewater lead.
Bridgewater wrapped up the scoring with a four-run seventh as the Eagles finished up the contest with two more homers. Following a groundout to open the inning, freshman Kelsey Limbert drilled a pitch over the left field fence to put the Eagles up, 11-6. After a strikeout, Thomas belted a ground-rule double and Hinegardner reached on an error to put a pair of runners on for Jenkins. The senior pushed both runners home when she belted a ball over the right field fence to finalize the scoring and hand Bridgewater a 14-6 win.
Thomas got the win in the circle after allowing six runs on 12 hits in a complete-game performance.
Goodman and Thomas paced the offense with three-hit games while Lam and Jenkins each drove in three runs in the victory.
Cortney Halsey led Emory & Henry's bats with a three-hit game. Taylor Banner picked up the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits across four and a third innings of work.
Bridgewater is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Lynchburg for a conference twinbill. First pitch against the Hornets is set for 3 p.m.
