Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On Saturday afternoon at the BC Softball Field, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team couldn't tally enough key hits at opportune times, while York College (Pa.) scored 11 runs on the day to hand the Eagles a doubleheader sweep in non-conference action.
Bridgewater (0-2) lost the opener by a 6-3 tally and saw a seventh-inning rally come up short in a 5-4 loss in game two.
In the opener, the bulk of Bridgewater's offense came from a three-run blast from sophomore Brianna Cox but the Eagles couldn't hold York off of the scoreboard in the latter innings in a 6-3 loss.
York (2-0) capitalized on a pair of fielding miscues from the Eagles to put two runs on the board in the first. Shortstop Katie Maloney led off the inning with a single but was later gunned out at home with the bases loaded for the second out of the inning. Designated hitter Lauren Lum reached on a fielder's choice as an error at second base allowed two runs to score, handing the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
Following a scoreless first, the Eagles got on the board with three runs in the second to take the lead. Samantha Bird led off the inning with a walk before left fielder Haley Harris was hit by pitch to put two Eagles runners on base.
With two runners on, Cox delivered a three-run shot over the right field fence to put Bridgewater out in front by a 3-2 tally.
York knotted the game up with a single-run in the third, tying the game up at three runs each.
Ashley Chenoweth led off the inning with a single and was pushed to third on a Carleigh Ruleman single to put runners on the corners. Chenoweth scored during the next at-bat on a groundout from Natalie Fritz to tie the game up at three runs apiece.
York pitcher Sara Thacker put the Eagles down in order in the fourth prior to the Spartans adding three runs in the top of the fifth. Maloney led off the inning with a single and swiped second before being pushed to third on a groundout. Second baseman Jenna Ruby followed with a triple to the gap in right field, scoring Maloney. Ruby was plated on a Ruleman double to right field to extend the York lead to 5-3. The Spartans rounded out the scoring when Ruleman scored on a groundout to build a 6-3 advantage.
Bridgewater threatened in the sixth when a pair of York errors gave the Eagles new life. Harris reached on an error to open the inning before Cox reached on a fielder's choice during the ensuing at-bat. Lauren Jenkins followed with a single and pinch runner Haley Lloyd tried to score but was thrown out heading home to keep the contest at a 6-3 York lead. Freshman Jen Balcom followed with a single to put runners on the corners but a groundout ended the inning, keeping the contest at a three-run deficit for the Eagles.
Both teams went down without much offense in the seventh as York took home a 6-3 lead in the opener.
Jenkins led the offense with a pair of hits, while it was Cox providing the scoring with a three-run homer in the second.
Cox picked up the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits over five innings of work.
Maloney and Ruleman each tallied two hits for the Spartans, while Thacker recorded the win in the circle. Thacker allowed three runs on five hits in a complete-game effort.

First baseman Brea Hinegardner followed with a two-RBI single, driving in Fridley and Throckmorton to put the Eagles up, 2-0.
York tied the game up with single runs in the third and fourth. Maloney led off the third with a triple and was driven in by a Ruby single to cut the Bridgewater lead to 2-1. In the fourth, Alyssa Malino doubled to right center and was pushed home on a groundout from the bat of Kayleen Bell to tie the contest up at two runs each.
Both teams settled in over the middle innings before the Spartans regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Ruleman belted a one-out, solo homer over the left-field fence, handing the Spartans a 3-2 advantage. The Spartans added two more runs in the top of the seventh and the Eagles tagged two runs on the board in the bottom of the inning and had the go-ahead run at the plate.
Harris pushed in the first run when she scored Fridley on a single to center before Jenkins reached on a fielding error which allowed Throckmorton to score, cutting the deficit to 5-4. York pitched its way out of the jam when Jen Balcom popped up to end the game.
Fridley led the Bridgewater offense with a 3-for-4 game and a pair of runs. Seven different players recorded a hit for the Eagles in the nightcap.
