Softball Swept at the Hands of Emory & Henry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On Senior Day at the BC Softball Field, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team left 19 runners on base in a pair of losses to the Emory & Henry Wasps. Bridgewater dropped the opener by a 4-0 score and fell in game two by a 7-0 tally.

Emory & Henry (18-8, 4-6 ODAC) made the most of its opportunities in the opener, tallying four runs on six hits to take the game one victory over the Eagles.

After a scoreless start for both teams, Emory & Henry used back-to-back doubles to get on the board in third. Riley Pudney led off the inning with a double to the gap in right and was pushed home on a Cortney Hulsey double to center field to build a 1-0 lead for the Wasps. Halsey advanced to third on a groundout and moved home as Jordan Chrisley reached on an error to send the Wasps to the bottom of the third with a 2-0 lead.

Bridgewater was limited to a Kasey Anderson single in the home half of the third and the Wasps added a single run in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0. Ragan Halsey belted a two-out double to right field and scored on a Hannah Bays single, pushing the gap to 3-0.

The Eagles looked to respond in the bottom of the frame when Brea Hinegardner walked to load the bases after a Samantha Fridley walk and a Brooke Throckmorton single. Emory & Henry was able to work its way out of the jam, forcing a groundout to maintain a 3-0 advantage.

Taylor Doss drilled a solo homer for Emory & Henry in the sixth and Bridgewater once again loaded the bases but the Eagles couldn't get on the board in the sixth or the seventh in a 4-0 loss.

Anderson led the Eagles with a 2-for-4 game in the opener while Brianna Cox was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over the first four innings of play. Lauren Jenkins replaced Cox in the fifth and worked the final three innings, allowing one run on just two hits.

Pudney led Emory & Henry in game one with a 2-for-3 outing and Taylor Banner secured her eighth win of the year behind a complete-game, six-hit shutout. The win for the Wasps was their first against Bridgewater since 2005.

Emory & Henry tallied single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to run out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap.

Bethany Anderson reached on a one-out walk and scored later in the inning on a Doss single to put Emory & Henry up 1-0 after the first.

The Wasps added a run in the second before a Cortney Halsey groundout scored pinch runner Kaitlyn Pruitt in the fourth inning to send Emory & Henry to a 3-0 lead after three and a half innings of play.

Bridgewater (14-9-1, 5-6-1 ODAC) stranded a pair of base runners in the fourth and fifth before Emory & Henry effectively put the game away in the sixth. Doss and Ragan Halsey led off the sixth with a pair of singles with Doss advancing to second on an error by the shortstop. Bays popped up for the first out but Eagles catcher Lacey Shifflett threw the ball away on the play allowing Halsey to move into scoring position. Pudney followed with a two-RBI double before Cortney Halsey belted a double to score Pudney, extending the Wasps' lead to 6-0. Halsey later scored on a bunt single from Jordan Chrisley to finalize the scoring at a 7-0 margin. The doubleheader sweep for the Eagles was their first at the hands of Emory & Henry since 2003.

Bridgewater stranded at least one base runner in each inning of the nightcap, while Jenkins and Fridley led the Eagles with two hits each in the finale.

Amanda Lutz picked up the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits over the first 5.1 innings of play. Haley Harris replaced Lutz in the sixth and allowed just two hits in recording the final five outs of the game.

Doss paced the Wasps with a 3-for-4 game in the nightcap and it was Brandy Bryant picking up the win in the circle with a six-hit shutout over seven innings.

Bridgewater returns to action on Wednesday at Lynchburg. Start time is set for 3 p.m. The Eagles' previously scheduled twinbill with Averett has been cancelled due to the pending weather forecast which calls for an inch of rain on Monday in the Shenandoah Valley.
