Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team dropped two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contests at home against the Emory & Henry College Wasps.
The Wasps won the opener, 1-0, as the game went by quickly without much action until the Wasps managed to score the only run in the top of the third. Caley Hodge reached first on an error to bring home Jordan Chrisley with only one out before the Eagles pulled off a double play to end the inning.
Bridgewater found two hits in the bottom of the sixth and nearly tied up the score but the Wasps were able to tag out Mariah Wharton as she headed home and would secure the first game victory.
Wharton and Brooke Throckmorton went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Eagles while Amanda Lutz pitched all seven innings. The senior pitcher allowed one run on seven hits while striking out two batters and walking two.
Hodge led the Wasps as she went 2-for-3 at bat with one RBI. Bethany Anderson went 1-for-2. Brandy Bryant took the win in the circle, giving away two hits while striking out two batters.
The second game started off with Emory & Henry grabbing the first run in the top of the first but the Eagles managed to pull ahead for a 3-1 lead as Samantha Bird notched her first collegiate home run to bring in two runners.
Despite collecting one out in the top of the second, the Wasps snuck in a run as Bailey Williams doubled to bat in Riley Pudney from second base for a 3-2 score.
The Eagles managed to catch their second out of the inning and were looking to find their third when Hodge singled to bring in Williams. The Wasps then took advantage of wild pitches to advance bases before Taylor Doss collected two RBIs, pushing Emory & Henry into the lead, 5-3.
The Wasps ended their time at bat with one final run for a 6-3 score, heading into the bottom of the inning.
Bridgewater managed to cut the deficit to 6-4 as Balcom batted in Throckmorton but it would be the only run the Eagles would see for a while.
Emory & Henry extended their lead as the Wasps collected three more runs in the top of the fifth before adding another two runs in the top of the sixth for an 11-4 score. Emory & Henry closed out the scoring with two runs in the seventh to make it 13-4.
The Eagles were able to plate two more runs for the final 13-6 score in the bottom of the seventh, as a double by Bird sent home Rayann Foltz while Brianna Cox took advantage of a Lacey Shifflett single to earn a second run.
Bird was 2-for-4 with one run and tallied four RBIs while Lutz also went 2-for-4 with one run. Jen Balcom and Shifflett notched one RBI apiece.
Cox was 2-for-4 with two runs and took the loss for the Eagles in the circle as she gave up eight hits and struck out one batter in two innings.
Leah Elswick led the Wasps as she was 4-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Doss was 3-for-4 with one run and three RBIs while Williams was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Taylor Banner took the win in the cirlce, giving up seven hits and striking out one batter.
The Eagles are back on Wednesday when they face off against ODAC rival Randolph-Macon College at Fulk Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
